Was Jesus A Tree Hugger?
Isaiah 55:1-9; Luke 13:1-9
Now, that's a loaded question if there ever was one. Try calling someone "tree hugger" without at least a hint of sarcastic inflection. Most people I know aren't inclined to talk about Jesus in that tone of voice. Regardless of their religious orientation.
About some of his followers? Well, that's another story.
Anyway, Elizabeth Campbell definitely got our attention... And gave us good food for thought in her sermon on Christ's parable about a certain fig tree that gave nobody any food at all!
The owner of the farm wanted to chop down the tree and be done with it once and for all. His gardener, though, had another idea.
"Let's give the tree one more year and see what happens. I'll tend to it, prune its branches, give it a healthy dose of manure, water it well. It's worth a try, don't you think?"
What can Jesus mean by such a simple, down to earth story? Where and when and how does it touch down in the way your life, and mine, gets lived out today?
