The Radiant Ego

Exodus 32:1-14

The viral post on Facebook shows two striking bovine images side by side...

On the left is an old-fashioned painting of Aaron and the Israelites cavorting in front of a huge golden image of a male calf. They're throwing a religious party in the name of the invisible and presumed absent Lord of Lords who'd apparently led them out of Egypt only to let them die a slow death in the Sinai wasteland.

On the right is a close-up full-color photograph of the bronze rampant bull statue that proudly guards Wall Street in the heart of New York's (and the nation's) financial district. No people and no thing besides that symbol of a vibrant, potent stock market can be fitted into this compelling image.

This visual message is making the rounds in the midst of a worldwide movement that began several weeks ago as "Occupy Wall Street." Protesters converged on the financial center and a nearby park, declaring that they, "the 99%," wanted our nation's leaders to rectify the imbalance of financial distribution among Americans that has been described as 1% of our population controlling as much as 38% of the nation's wealth. Perhaps Americans have been bowing low before a new improved version of Aaron's golden calf?

At the same time that assertion was going viral on the Internet and spawning hundreds of new "Occupy _______" gatherings across our country and around the world, here in little Alameda by the Bay a sermon was being preached by our youth director Russell Mowry.

For the record, Russ never once mentioned what I've just been describing. He did bring up Justin Bieber, though. Cheering Russ on that morning, this old preacher heard some new truths as he unpacked the familiar story in fresh and timely ways. Give a listen. You'll be glad you did.
