Advent... What's the Point?
Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11; John 1:6-8, 19-28
The tiny Marin County town of Bolinas has its own Border Patrol. They're on call 24/7 with one simple mission.
Any time the powers-that-be decide to post a sign on California Highway One that identifies the two-lane road that leads to Bolinas, the Border Patrol vigilantes spring into action. In the dark of night, they steal on out to the intersection and steal away the offending sign.
Well, that's the way it used to be. Their covert actions were so danged successful so many times that the authorities simply gave up several years ago. So if you don't already know where Bolinas is, you'll probably never find it. And the locals wouldn't want it any other way.
Our youth director Russell Mowry has never been to Bolinas, CA. But he's done the next best thing. He's been to Luckenbach, TX. Or driven right past it in a fruitless search for that famous little town's non-existent signpost. And those few locals, kissing kin to our friendly neighbors, are mighty pleased to keep things just that way.
He told us so on Sunday, at the front end of his sermon on John the Baptist's modest ministry of pointing people away from himself and right towards Jesus Christ.
